Consumer tip: Home improvement scams - Marin Independent Journal

Posted by [email protected] on

Our bad weather this winter may bring unscrupulous scammers to your door. Senior homeowners in particular have been targeted by unlicensed contractors going door to door. They may claim to be working in the neighborhood and have “noticed” that your roof shingles, siding, fence, or some other exterior item is rotten or weather-damaged. They offer a “free inspection,” which leads to an enticing low-ball estimate.

Once the demo work starts, the estimate jumps considerably when the workers suddenly find “unexpected damage.” Feeling stuck, the homeowner approves a new inflated price in order to get the work completed.

Beware of door to door solicitations and unsolicited free inspections; don’t fall for someone telling you they have “leftover materials” that will be discounted to you; don’t pay with cash upfront; don’t be pressured for an immediate decision; ask for and check the contractor’s license (cslb.ca.gov).
